Tommy McCook, Rolando Alphonso, Johnny Moore, Lester Sterling, Don Drummond, Lloyd Knibb, Lloyd Brevett, Jerry Haynes, and Jackie Mittoo began working together in 1963 and formed The Ska-talites in May 1964. McCook, Drummond, Moore and Sterling were all students at the famed Alpha Boys School in Kingston.
In August 1965 The Skatalites played their last show after Don Drummond's cofinement to Bellvue for the death of his girlfriend, Margarita. The break-up results in the formation of two studio bands, Rolando Alphonso & The Studio One Orchestra and Tommy McCook & The Supersonics.
The band reformed in 1983 and is still active nowadays, despite the death of many original members.

In 1983 the original Skatalites (minus trombonist Don Drummond) re-formed to appear at Jamaica’s Sunsplash Festival. While preparing for the show, they recorded 11 tracks at the newly opened Music Mountain studio.
It's not entirely clear what happened at those sessions, but it seems that after 5 days of recording the band members fell out. By then 9 tracks had been more-or-less completed, and on the remaining 2 no horn parts were recorded.
This album contains the 9 completed tracks that are previously unreleased.
